Shane Black’s “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang” will open the ninth Hollywood Film Festival at Grauman’s Chinese Theater on October 18th, launching the event which will include ten world premieres. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Val Kilmer and Michelle Monaghan, the crime/thriller centers on a petty thief (Downey) posing as an actor who is brought to Los Angeles for an unlikely audition and finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation along with his high school love (Monaghan) and a detective (Kilmer) who’s been training him for his upcoming role.

Hollywood may often mix up homage with repetition, but occasionally it knows how to successfully give a new approach to an old genre, as it showed on Sunday at a French festival of American film.

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, a sharp neo-noir thriller-comedy helmed by first-time director Shane Black, impressed critics at the Deauville festival being held in this Normandy seaside town.

This year’s Boston Film Festival will be condensed to a five-day affair, half of last year’s 10-day run.

Festival officials announced the change yesterday as they released a partial list of this year’s lineup, headlined by three Hollywood features: the US premiere of ”Prime,” starring Meryl Streep and Uma Thurman; ”Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer; and ”North Country,” featuring Charlize Theron and Frances McDormand.
