Movie premieres are customary in Los Angeles and New York.

Not in Lakeland.

But then not all films feature an actor whose Best Friend Forever is an exuberant Lakeland fourth-grader named Jaylen Arnold.

“Lifted,” an independent movie with a plot line that involves childhood bullying, will have a special screening Saturday night at the Polk Theatre, complete with a red carpet entrance by cast members. One of those actors is Dash Mihok, best known for his roles in “Romeo + Juliet” and “The Thin Red Line.”

Mihok, like Jaylen, has Tourette syndrome, a neurological disorder that causes involuntary and repetitive movements or speech or both.

In 2009, Mihok learned about Jaylen’s Challenge, an anti-bullying campaign created by Jaylen and his family and promoted on his website, www.jaylenschallenge.org. Mihok traveled to Lakeland to meet Jaylen a few months later, and the two quickly formed a close bond.

The made-in-Birmingham film “Lifted” had its Alabama premiere Saturday at this weekend’s 12th annual Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, and as the closing credits rolled, the hometown crowd gave the movie an enthusiastic response. The filmmakers were pretty pleased, too.

“When you’re in the middle of it, you don’t always see it with the same eyes (as an audience), so it’s important to see it with people who don’t know anything about it,” Birmingham’s Hugh Hunter, who produced the film with his brother Alan Hunter, said.

Shot in and around Birmingham late last summer, “Lifted” is a coming-of-age story about a small-town Alabama boy who enters an “American Idol”-like singing contest to honor his father, a Marine who is redeployed to Afghanistan.

In my role as Executive Director of Ride 2 Recovery, a mental and physical rehabilitation program for injured veterans that makes a difference in the lives of those who come thru our program (more info: Ride2Recovery.com), I am asked to preview movies, music, and all things military and, or veteran related entertainment. Since we deal with a lot of PTSD patients, the scars of war are all to familiar and the haunting that they feel and the effects it takes on their families is hard to explain to those who do not know these brave men and women or experienced war and its related hardships themselves.

So it was last Thursday that I, along with a few other military organizations came to meet for a viewing of the upcoming movie “Lifted.” Because the director was a noted Hollywood liberal, I was not really sure what I was about to see.
